Fire Suppression Systems Plymouth
Fire Detection & Protection Solutions for Your Business
Having operated heavy machinery in Devon ourselves, we noticed that many fire equipment suppliers either did not fully understand our specific risks or offered products at unsustainable prices.
After developing and installing our own fire safety and suppression systems, we decided to share our knowledge with Plymouth’s industrial and commercial sectors, serving all PL1 postcodes as well as surrounding areas, including but not limited to Saltash, Ivybridge, Plympton, Torpoint, Tavistock, and Yelverton.

Fire Suppression System FAQs
At Pyromatic, our engineers work with manufacturers, fleet operators and industrial sites, protecting businesses across Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Here are the answers to the questions local businesses ask most.
What are fire suppression systems?
Fire suppression systems combine fire detection and extinguishing in one self-contained unit. They are designed for high-risk equipment such as production machinery, commercial vehicles and electrical enclosures, like those on Plymouth’s industrial estates. When a fire is detected, the system discharges a clean agent, CO₂, dry powder, foam or wet chemical, putting the fire out within seconds.
Read our Guide to Fire Suppression Systems in the UK to learn more.
How does an automatic system detect a fire?
Our automatic fire suppression systems use a Fire Detection Tube (FDT), a pressurised polymer tube routed through the protected area. When fire or intense heat reaches the tube, it ruptures at the hottest point. The pressure drop opens the valve and releases the extinguishing agent. The entire length of the tube acts as a detector, so there are no gaps in coverage.
Can you fit fire suppression to trucks and goods vehicles?
Yes. We install vehicle fire suppression on trucks, goods vehicles and commercial fleets, protecting the engine compartment where most vehicle fires start. The system discharges automatically, so the driver doesn’t need to spot the fire or reach an extinguisher first.
Which extinguishing agent is right for my equipment?
The type of fire suppression you need depends on the fire risk:
- Electrical equipment, panels and IT hardware: clean agents such as FK-5-1-12, which leave no residue.
- Vehicle engine compartments and machinery at risk of fuel and hydraulic fires: dry powder, clean agents, or foam.
- Industrial and storage areas: sprinklers, foam or dry chemical
- Commercial kitchens: wet chemical.
Our engineers assess each piece of equipment and specify the agent that matches its hazard.
Can a fire suppression system go off by accident?
No. Our fire suppression systems only activate when the detection tube is ruptured by fire or heat impingement. They have no electronic sensors that can be triggered by dust, steam or electrical faults, which removes the risk of false alarms and unwanted discharges.
Do you cover the whole of Plymouth and surrounding areas?
Yes. We serve all PL postcodes, including Plymstock, Plympton, Devonport, Estover, Efford, Ivybridge, Tavistock and Yelverton. Across the Tamar, we also cover Saltash, Torpoint and throughout Cornwall. Our Devon head office means Plymouth sites are well within our regular service area.
Will my insurer require regular servicing?
Many insurers do. Most fire suppression systems need a service at least once a year, but some insurance policies specify 6-monthly checks. Regular servicing keeps you compliant with regulations, such as BS EN 15004 and BS 5306 and shows your insurer the system is maintained. Check your policy terms, and we can schedule visits to match.
What accreditations should a fire suppression installer have?
Look for industry membership, quality certification and tested components. At Pyromatic, we have:
- membership of the Fire Industry Association (FIA – SP203-3)
- ISO 9001:2015 certification (Cert. No. 493782025)
- use of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Recognised Components
