Fire Detection & Protection for Your Business

As heavy machinery operators ourselves with direct experience, we discovered that many fire equipment suppliers either underestimated our unique risks or provided prices beyond our budget.

After designing and installing our own fire safety and suppression systems, we chose to share our expertise more broadly across Exeter’s industrial and commercial industries, covering all EX1 postcodes and nearby areas such as Cullompton, Crediton, Newton Abbot, Cranbrook, Topsham, and Exmouth.

Fire Suppression System FAQs

Exeter businesses are a short drive from our head office near Cullompton. That makes the city and surrounding EX postcodes one of our most active service areas. The FAQs below cover what businesses most want to know, from protecting server rooms to linking suppression into existing fire alarms.

What are fire suppression systems?

Fire suppression systems are fire protection solutions that are fitted directly to the equipment most likely to catch fire. That could be a server rack at Exeter Science Park, a control panel in a Marsh Barton unit, or a vehicle engine bay. When they sense heat, smoke or flame, they release an extinguishing agent within seconds, stopping the fire before it spreads. Common agents include clean agents, CO₂, dry powder, foam and wet chemicals.

Read our Guide to Fire Suppression Systems in the UK to learn more.

What type of fire suppression do I need?

The type of fire suppression agent you need depends on your fire risks:

  • Data centres and server rooms: clean agents that won’t damage electronics.
  • Industrial and storage units: sprinklers, foam or dry chemical.
  • Vehicles and mobile plant: dry powder, foam or clean agent.
  • Commercial kitchens: wet chemical.

Our engineers can survey your Exeter site and recommend the right system to suit your requirements.

What fire suppression is best for a server room or comms cabinet?

A gaseous clean agent system is usually the right fit. Our DLP systems use FK-5-1-12, which is electrically non-conductive and leaves no residue, so your IT equipment is not damaged by the agent. They fit inside server racks, network cupboards and UPS cabinets, protecting the equipment where a fire would start.

Can a suppression system connect to our fire alarm or BMS?

Yes. Our fire suppression systems can integrate with interface options that can:

  • trigger alarms
  • shut off power to affected equipment
  • control ventilation
  • report to a Building Management System (BMS) or SCADA

They also integrate with existing addressable fire alarm panels and low-voltage smoke detection.

What is the difference between DLP and ILP systems?

The difference is where the agent is released. A Direct Low Pressure (DLP) fire suppression system discharges through the detection tube itself, so it suits small, enclosed spaces like control panels. An Indirect Low Pressure (ILP) system uses the tube only to detect the fire, then releases the agent through dedicated nozzles, so it suits engine bays, mobile plant and larger areas.

Do you protect vehicle fleets and plant around Exeter?

Yes. We fit automatic fire suppression systems to trucks, goods vehicles, buses, coaches and mobile plant used in waste, wood processing and agriculture. These ILP systems use dry powder, foam or clean agents, depending on the hazard. They are fully compliant with UNECE R107, the regulation covering engine compartment fire suppression in buses and coaches.

What happens after a system has gone off?

Once the fire is out, the system needs servicing and recharging before it can protect the equipment again. Our engineers carry this out quickly to keep downtime to a minimum. With clean agent systems, there is no residue to clear, so electrical equipment can be inspected and brought back into use sooner.

How much does fire suppression cost in Exeter?

The price depends on what you are protecting and how large it is. A single electrical cabinet needs a far smaller system than a waste loader or a server room. The agent type and the number of detection and discharge points also affect the cost. Contact us or call 01392 691891 for a quote tailored to your site.
