They use heat, smoke or flame sensors for detection, which then triggers the release of an extinguishing agent, such as clean agents, CO₂, dry powder, foam or wet chemical.

Our fire suppression systems use a pressurised Fire Detection Tube (FDT). The tube runs through the area being protected and bursts at the hottest point when exposed to fire. The drop in pressure opens the valve, and the extinguishing agent is released straight onto the fire. The whole tube acts as a detector, so a fire can be picked up anywhere along its length. The systems need no external power and only activate when there is a real fire or heat impingement, which removes the risk of false alarms.

The difference is how the agent reaches the fire. Direct Low Pressure (DLP) gaseous fire suppression systems release the agent through the detection tube itself, at the point where it bursts. That makes them suited to small, enclosed spaces such as:

• control cabinets
• electrical and switchgear panels
• server racks
• UPS cabinets

Indirect Low Pressure (ILP) automatic fire suppression systems use the tube only for detection. The agent is then discharged through a separate network of nozzles, which suits larger spaces and more complex risks such as engine bays, mobile plant and whole rooms.

Both types can be retrofitted to existing equipment or fitted to new equipment.

The right system depends on what you are protecting and the type of fire it is likely to produce. As a general guide:

• Electrical equipment and data centres: clean agents, which leave no residue.
• Vehicles, buses, coaches, machinery and mobile plant: dry powder, clean agents, or foam, which cope with fuel and oil fires in engine compartments.
• Industrial and storage areas: sprinklers, foam or dry chemical.
• Commercial kitchens: wet chemical systems.

It depends on your sector and your fire risk assessment. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (England and Wales) and the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, businesses must assess fire risks and put suitable fire safety measures in place. Where that assessment identifies a high-risk area, suppression may be required.

For passenger vehicles, UNECE Regulation 107 makes automatic engine compartment fire suppression mandatory on new buses and coaches carrying more than 22 passengers. Many insurers also require suppression on high-value plant and machinery. Our ILP fire suppression systems are fully UNECE R107 compliant.

Yes. The FK-5-1-12 clean agent used in our gaseous systems is electrically non-conductive and leaves no residue after discharge. It is suitable for live electrical equipment, data and IT systems. Because there is no cleanup, your equipment can be brought back into service quickly after an incident. The system can then be serviced and recharged with minimal downtime.

Most fire suppression systems need servicing at least once a year, and some insurance companies require servicing every 6 months. Regular servicing does three things:

• keeps the system compliant with standards such as BS EN 15004 and BS 5306
• extends its lifespan
• identifies issues before they become failures
