Fire Suppression System FAQs
At Pyromatic, we protect businesses across Greater Manchester, from data and media operations to logistics and industrial sites. These FAQs answer what local businesses need to know before choosing a fire suppression system.
What are fire suppression systems?
Fire suppression systems detect heat, smoke or flame and release an extinguishing agent within seconds, 24 hours a day, whether or not anyone is on site. That matters for operations in Manchester that run overnight, such as distribution parks, waste sites and data centres. The agent is released straight onto the fire, which limits damage and downtime compared with a manual response. Depending on the risk, the agent can be a clean agent, CO₂, dry powder, foam or wet chemical.
Read our Guide to Fire Suppression Systems in the UK to learn more.
How do you protect data centres and comms rooms from fire risks?
We protect them at two levels. DLP gaseous systems fit inside individual server racks, network cupboards and UPS cabinets, putting out a fire at its source. For whole rooms, ILP systems can discharge clean agents across the protected space. Both use FK-5-1-12, which leaves no residue on IT hardware. See data centre fire suppression to learn more.
Can waste and recycling sites protect their mobile plant from fire?
Yes. Loading shovels, excavators, material handlers, and other waste processing plant operate while surrounded by combustible material. Dust and debris can collect on hot engine parts and hydraulics. An ILP system detects fire in these areas and suppresses it within seconds, protecting the machine and the operator.
What type of fire suppression do I need?
Your fire risk determines the type of suppression system you need:
- Data centres and comms rooms (such as around Salford Quays): clean agents that are safe for IT equipment.
- Mobile plant, vehicles, machinery and logistics fleets: dry powder, clean agents or foam delivered by an ILP system.
- Industrial storage: sprinklers, foam or dry chemical.
- Commercial kitchens: wet chemical.
Our team can recommend the right system once we know what you’re protecting.
How quickly does an automatic system put out a fire?
Our automatic systems suppress fire within seconds of detection. When fire or heat ruptures the detection tube, the valve opens straight away, and the agent is released onto the fire. No person needs to act, which limits damage and downtime compared with waiting for a manual response.
Who is responsible for fire safety in a Manchester business?
The “responsible person” is usually the employer, owner or occupier. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, they must carry out a fire risk assessment and put suitable fire safety measures in place. Where the assessment identifies high-risk equipment or areas, automatic suppression is one way to control that risk.
How often do fire suppression systems need maintenance?
Plan for at least one service a year. Some insurers ask for one every 6 months. Maintenance keeps your fire suppression system compliant with standards, such as BS EN 15004 and BS 5306, and makes sure every component will work when needed. We offer ongoing maintenance contracts and schedule visits to fit around your operation.
What information do you need to give a quote?
It helps to tell us what you want to protect (for example, vehicles, plant, or electrical cabinets), how many units there are, and their approximate size. Photos of engine bays or cabinets are also useful. Our team can then recommend a system and agent. Call 01392 691891 or contact us online.
